There are many types of rare silver coins available for collection - Three cent silvers, half dimes, dimes, twenty cent pieces, quarters, half dollars and dollars. Many of these are quite affordable for those just getting started in silver coin collection. Each of these types contain a large number of styles with many key dates and grades that bring huge sums at auction.
No Silver Coins in Circulation
Before 1965, dimes and quarters were composed of 90% silver and 10% copper. In the 1950s and 60s it became evident that silver was becoming too expensive for the U.S. Government to purchase for coins. A switch from silver to copper and nickel was made. Once the new coins came into use, coin collectors and people in the know began taking the silver coins out of circulation.
Today, it is quite an event to find a silver coin in circulation. If you find one, chances are it will be in pretty bad condition. A few rare silver coins are probably still in circulation and this keeps the avid collector still looking, but finding one is like winning the lottery.
US Silver Dollar
The silver dollar is the most popular silver coin for investors and collectors. The United States first began minting silver dollars in 1792 with the passage of the Coinage Act which created the US Mint and authorized the construction of the US mint building in Philadelphia. The dollar was discontinued after 1835, and since then only the copper-nickel pieces first authorized in 1971 have been coined for circulation. The silver half-dollar was first coined in 1794. In 1916 the U.S. Mint produced what is widely considered America's most beautiful silver coin, the Walking Liberty Half-Dollar. Today's Silver Eagle dollars are not minted for regular circulation but for investors and collectors. There are a number of types available:
Flowing Hair 1794-1795
A 1794 Flowing Hair silver dollar, believed to be the first silver dollar ever struck by the United States Mint recently sold for $7,850,000, setting a new record as the world’s most valuable rare coin.

Gobrecht Dollars 1836-1839
The Gobrecht silver dollars were pattern coins that were never meant for circulation, these coins are very valuable and scarce with PCGS showing only 296 being certified for dates 1836 and 1839 and NGC has certified 247 for 1836, 1838, and 1839 dates.
Liberty Seated Type 1840-1873
Seated Liberty was the first regular issue dollar created for circulation after the year 1804. 19,750 coins were minted bearing the date 1803. This coin was very popular although mintage remained still low only exceeding the minting of a million or more only 2 times.
Trade Dollars 1873-1885
After the beautiful “Seated Liberty” series the US designed the big Trade dollar in order to compete in the global commerce market. It was ordered to be issued for the use in the Orient.
Morgan Type 1878-1921
